  Archibald L. Cavender, a married blacksmith from Nashville, Washington County, Illinois,
was born about 1831 in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee.
He stood 5' 8½" tall with light hair, blue eyes and a light complexion.

He served during the Civil War with the Union Army, with Co. D, 48th Illinois Infantry
Enlisted on August 27, 1861 in Nashville, Washington Co., IL.
Mustered in as a Sergeant on October 15, 1861 at Camp Butler, Illinois.

48th IL Volunteer INF REG
This regiment was raised in the southern part of the state, commanded by Colonel Isham N. Haynie. The regiment was mustered in at Camp Butler and were under Grant's command in Kentucky. They fought at the Battle of Fort Donelson and then the Battle of Shiloh, where the company lost half of its detail. They subsequently were engaged in the siege of Corinth. They Fought in the Battle of Vicksburg, Tunnel Hill, and Missionary Ridge. Over ninety percent of the men re-enlisted for another term in January 1864. They were involved in the battles of the Atlanta Campaign. They were involved in the grand review of May 24, 1865. The regiment was mustered out in Little Rock, Arkansas, on August 15, 1865.

Also listed as a Recruit was a James H. Cavender.
