Additional information from Debbi Geer :

Sometime in the 1870's he moved his family to Kansas and remained there until
sometime in the 1910's when move to Washington state where he died 16 Apr 1920.
He was listed in the 1920 census as residing in Lewis Co., WA. in the town of Chehalis.
I don't have his burial location but suspect that it's there in Chehalis.

The most common spelling of the surname is Pruitt, but between two generations
they managed to have it spelled various ways - Pruitt, Pruett, Preuitt and Prewitt.
My grandmother was a Pruitt girl. My 4th gr-grandfather and his 5 brothers along with all
their sons managed to change the spelling of the family surname. As some of the boys
moved their families the spelling got changed and whatever the reason is a mystery unless
there was a lack of reading and writing and someone who was better educated took upon
themselves to spell it as it sounded to them.

In the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System database Cyrus' name
is given as Cyrus Pruitt - same as theservice data. When he grew up it was Pruitt and
later changed to Pruett. Then Macoupin Co marriage records show his name as Preuitt.
By the time he moved to Kansas he had the spelling changed to Prewitt and kept it
that way until he died.
