WILLIAM ABNER OWENS

William Abner Owens was born on 10 May 1850 around Rome, Floyd Co., GA.
According to Census records and other documents this is the correct birthday.
His headstone reflect 10 May 1934 which I believe to be incorrect.
He died 7 July 1921 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR
and is resting along side of his wife Katheren in the
Wattensaw Baptist Church Cemetery located on Highway 31,
eight miles north of Lonoke in Lonoke, Co., AR.

William is the son of Obadiah Owens and
possibly a woman named Lucinda ??.
He was the grandson of Thomas Anderson Owens SR and Nancy Smith.

His known siblings are:
      John D. Owens
      Thomas Anderson Owens
      Obadiah Union Owens
      Mary Owens
      Robert Lee Owens.

He had the following siblings from his father's
second marriage to Mary White Hembree:
      George Washington Owens
      James Mulkey Owens
      Newton Owens
      Vandiver Owens
      Julius Cornelius Dock Owens
      Effie L. Owens
      Mattie E. Owens

In January 1890 he married Katheren "Katie" Elizabeth McIntosh [1868-1946]
in Lonoke Co., AR.

They had the following known children:

  • Mary Jewel Owens [1892]
who married J. w. Allen and John "Nick" Meyer

  • Nancy Grace Owens [1893]
          who married Bruce Cummins

  • Annie Bell Owens[1895]
          who married Archie Williams

  • Katherine Mae Owens [1897]

  • Irwin Myrtle Owens [1899-died at birth]

  • Margaret Owens [1899-died at birth]

  • William Union Owens [1902]

  • Burna Elizabeth Owens [1905]

  • Benjamin Abner Owens [1908]

William and Katheren's resting-place went unmarked for many years.
The only marking was a piece of white marble broken in half.
This piece of marble came from a dresser that had belonged to Katheren.
Bruce Cummins and his son Clarence Cummings broke the
piece of marble in half and then drove each half
into the ground to mark each place.

Later on new Headstones were provided but a piece of the
broken white marble remains in front of the new stone.
The birth date shown on Williams's headstone is 1834.
Other documentation, such as Census Records,
    Marriage Licenses and Death Certification
indicate that William was born around 1850.

William came to Lonoke Co. around 1872 with his brother O. U. Owens.
Another brother Thomas followed later around 1880.
He is listed on the Lonoke Co., AR 1880 Census living with his brother O. Union Owens,
his wife and their children, including Mary's children from a previous marriage to a man named Jones.
Their brother Thomas A. Owens is living next door with his wife Amanda Arnold.
